Message Hi Raphael - I spotted your email on the user list but thought I'd reply
here on dev as a prospective developer.

I don't think the issue is just a user issue. Giving an advertised interface
also helps developers make change (bug fixes and enhancements) in the
knowledge that they are not breaking anything else that may be accessing the
core library in a way we might not expect.

The argo project can have this problem for me, it can be dificult to
refactor things with any certainty that I'm not breaking some module. I'm
hoping we can demonstrate a stronger interface here.

As a prospective GEF developer I want to start looking at how the client
classes use gef and how gef works under the covers. At the moment it seems
there is no distinction between these things and it's difficult to know
where to start.

I suspect the argument that pushed you towards this email if "if it's not
broken, don't fix it" or "if the user doesn't want it why provide it".
However the dev teams wishes are also important and if their job is more
difficult without this then that may be good enough reason.

I do think though that an intermediate release would be a good idea. Get any
new functionality and fixes out that gentleware plus others have given us.

A restructure to an interface should then give the client developers the
same functionality as the previsouly but through a published interface. That
way the client developers don't have to think about how to use and test new
functionality at the same time as a restructure. In theory if they have
enough junit test cases they should be able to code against the new
interface and then test there classes against those.

Regards

Bob.
